There are some quirks introduced by Windows Vista
in the name of security that can be very confusing and frustrating
to users. The main one relates to User Account Control (UAC)
and folder virtualization. We won't comment on whether these
actually deliver better security but will happily state that if it
does it is a lousy way to do so from a user experience standpoint
(we like to think that UAC stands for "User Annoyance Creator").
If you install E-Z Audit to your PC (and this
means as an administrator for the program, nothing to do with your
client PCs that will be audited) as one login, say as an
Administrator, then use it as another login, say as a User, files
that should be shared in the AppData folder (as per Microsoft's own
definition of where to store shared data), may not be where you
expect it. It's been 'virtualized' into another folder.
So, install it as the user that you actually use it as. Don't
switch users. And if you have turned UAC off then decide to
turn it on (or v.v.), you will have some problems. Read on...
I want to run E-Z Audit Admin console on
Vista as a User account and not with Administrator privileges
Install E-Z Audit on your PC but do not
launch it. Then log off and log back in as the local Admin
and start E-Z Audit. Once it has started, close E-Z Audit
and go to C:\Program Data\EZAudit\ and
give that folder full control for yourself.
E-Z Audit isn't working on my PC to use
the Admin Console after I change User Account Control (UAC) settings
for myself
You can install E-Z Audit with User
Account Control (UAC) active or inactive. However, if you
install with UAC active then later de-activate UAC or v.v., you
may get error messages. This is not a defect in E-Z Audit
but is related to UAC and its use of virtualized folders.
If you want or need to change modes, it is recommended that you
uninstall E-Z Audit from your (admin) PC then re-install after
you have changed your UAC activation status.
On PCs running Vista, using the Intranet
module misses some information when auditing
